Lighting candles, confessing to God and prayer is the reaction to many in the face of the forecasting of a "big earthquake" that is to affect Costa Rica today. The forecast is being made by Quake Red Alert, a Brazilian Earthquake Forecast Studies Team, who developed a powerful triangulation-based algorithm for seismic forecasting.
Quake Red Alert, in its two years of existence has been responsible for detecting future earthquakes in more than 80% of the time.
The alert comes amid a seismic swarm in the area of Tobosí de Cartago since Christmas Day.
Speculation about an earthquake of great magnitude is also alarming the residents of Nicoya on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, where it is speculated that a 7.5 degree on the Richter Scale or higher will shake the ground for between 50 and 60 seconds.
According to Quake Red Alert, the planet has been suffering lately with large impacts and natural disasters. Quake Red Alert is a team of researchers led by Aroldo Maciel that after two years of study and research on earthquakes found a way to detect future earthquakes based on data triangulation algorithms.
In its Twitter post, Quake Red Alert post on Wednesday "Posibilidad de sismo en región entre Nicaragua y Panamá tiempo estimado 16hrs (Possibility of earthquake in Nicaragua and Panama region between estimated time 16hrs)".
Quake Red Alert was successful in predicting the October 13 earthquake in Chile and warned of the Japan quake in March some 18 hours before it happened.
However, Juan Segura, director of the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), explained that a forecast with these parameters is only speculation.
"Let them tell me where the epicentre will be, the depth, magnitude, and most importantly, the exact time, and the scientific justification. That's impossible", said Segura.
However, the OVSICORI is willing to execute actions in our country in response to Quake Red Alert forecast. Experts in Costa Rica say that if there is a modern technology in forecasting, there is no reason to use it.
The Colegio de Geólogos de Costa Rica (Association of Geologists of Costa Rica) referred to the alert and noted: Quake Red Alert is playing with the statistics and the seismicity in certain regions, like Latin America, which itself is very high and frequent. It (Quake Red Alert) can occasionally get it right and sometimes not, but we can not consider these sites as truly scientific, they said.
In any event one should never let down their guard and important to keep your home and workplace ready for an emergency.
Three years ago on January 8, 2009 - before the Quake Red Alert site was around - Costa Rica was hit by the worst quake in the last 150 years, a 6.2 quake in the area of Cinchona.
